Gombe State Government Expresses Concern Over Growing Number of HIV cases Among Children.

Gombe State is reported to have one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS among the northern states of Nigeria.

The Gombe State Agency for the Control of AIDS has pinpointed gender-based violence as a factor contributing to the increasing incidents of Human Immunodeficiency Virus among children in the state.

During an interview with journalists on Saturday, December 9, 2023, in observance of the 2023 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, Hassan Mohammed, the agency’s Programme Officer, expressed strong disapproval of the disease’s proliferation.

The representative from SACA( State Action Committee for Aids) expressed that they believe that these incidents, such as the rape of small children and individuals with mental health issues, contribute significantly to the HIV situation in Gombe State. The transmission of these infections to society has become a prevalent issue.

Gombe State is identified as having one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS in Northern Nigeria. According to Tobia John, the North-East Zonal Coordinator of the National Centre for the Control of AIDS, Taraba, Kaduna, Gombe, and the Federal Capital Territory have the highest number of people living with HIV/AIDS in the northern region.
