The Oscars Introduces New Category in Casting.

The 98th edition of the Academy Awards, set to occur in 2026, will introduce a new category called Achievement in Casting, as announced on Thursday, February 8, 2024.

The latest addition to the Academy Awards will be the Achievement in Casting Oscar, marking the first new category since the inception of Best Animated Feature Film in 2001. Established in July 2013, the Casting Directors Branch of the Academy comprises nearly 160 members.

In a press release, Janet Yang, the CEO and President of the Academy, emphasized the importance of recognizing the integral role casting directors play in filmmaking. She expressed,

“Casting directors play an essential role in filmmaking, and as the Academy evolves, we are proud to add casting to the disciplines that we recognize and celebrate.”

Details regarding eligibility criteria and voting procedures for this new category will be disclosed in April 2025. Future announcements will also address whether the Nigerian film industry will be included in this category.

In the meantime, Misan Harriman, a Nigerian-British photographer, received a nomination in the Best Live-Action Short Film category at the 2024 Academy Awards for his short film “The After,” starring David Oyelowo. Competing against films like “Invincible,” “Knight of Fortune,” “Red, White and Blue,” and “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” .”The After” is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
