NLC President Ajaero Claims There Is A Scheme To Provoke Violence Against Protesters.

Comrade Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has expressed concern about purported government intentions to instigate violence against NLC members in anticipation of the forthcoming nationwide strike set for today,Tuesday, February 27, 2024.

Ajaero confirmed the NLC’s commitment to carry out the demonstration as endorsed by the NLC national executive council, emphasizing that the difficulties experienced by Nigerians cannot be suppressed through coercion.

In a statement issued on Sunday, February 25, the labor leader voiced apprehension regarding an alleged plot to disrupt the protest using violent methods, warning that any assaults on peaceful protesters would lead to a total halt of services by workers. He called on the government to focus on addressing the country’s issues rather than worsening the people’s suffering.

Ajaero stated, “If the government persists in resorting to violence against us and other peace-loving Nigerians, it will be making a grave mistake. We will respond with a total shutdown through the withdrawal of services by workers.”

He emphasized the NLC’s strength and the resolve of disadvantaged Nigerians to peacefully assert their rights, cautioning against any efforts to intimidate them. Moreover, Ajaero disclosed that the NLC had informed the African Union and the United Nations about the perceived danger to the people’s right to peaceful protest, requesting international involvement to protect basic freedoms in Nigeria.
