The Film Adaptation Of Wole Soyinka’s Prison Memoir ‘The Man Died ‘ Set For Release in July.

The movie The Man Died is a film adaptation of Nobel Prize winner Wole Soyinka’s famous book, The Man Died.

Originally published in 1972, the book is a record of  27 months of imprisonment of the Nigerian writer, held as a political prisoner in 1967-1969 at the time of the Nigerian civil war. His offence: assisting the Biafran secessionists. The book reflects the author’s unwavering stand on the universality of freedom and human rights.

Awam Amkpa, the director of the adaptation, revealed in an Instagram post on May 2, Thursday, that the movie is scheduled for release in July 2024.

Wale Ojo, a seasoned actor in Nollywood, has been cast to portray the renowned Nigerian writer Wole Soyinka in a film adaptation.

The movie version of  The Man Died includes Nollywood actors such as Chidi Mokeme, Sam Dede, Norbert Young, Francis Onwochei, Edmond Enabe, and Segilola Ogidan, along with Simileoluwa Hassan, Christiana Oshunniyi, and newcomer Abraham Amkpa. Femi Odugbemi produces the film, with Bode Asiyanbi handling the writing duties.

The release of The Man Died is timed to align with Soyinka’s 90th birthday in July.

In 2022, another notable work by the Nobel Prize winner was adapted into a Netflix movie. The play Death and the King’s Horseman was adapted into Elesin Oba, The King’s Horseman.

The film was directed by Biyi Bandele and featured Odunlade Adekola as Elesin Oba, Shaffy Bello, Olawale Brymo Olofoolo, Deyemi Okanlawon amongst others.
