President Bola Tinubu has approved a law to revert to the previous national anthem.
President Tinubu signed the bill on Wednesday.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced this during a joint session of the National Assembly.
The bill aims to reinstate the original anthem adopted at the country’s independence on October 1, 1960, which was replaced in 1978 by the military government of Olusegun Obasanjo.
The Senate approved the bill on Tuesday, and the House of Representatives passed it last Thursday.
During his address at the joint session, the Senate President encouraged Nigerians to learn the new national anthem.
The new anthem was performed when President Tinubu arrived at the House chamber for the joint session.
“This morning, Mr President, signed into an act of Parliament the newly passed national anthem 2024,” the senate president said.
“In our usual tradition, the deputy Senate President and the deputy speaker with the leaders will receive Mr President now and usher him into the chamber for what I call “waka pass”, he added.
Mr. Akpabio stated that from now on, lawmakers will refer to themselves as brothers rather than compatriots, as mentioned in the previous national anthem.
“Henceforth, we will not refer to ourselves as dear compatriots, we will refer to ourselves as brothers and as we go forward in battle, whether in the field of sports, in the field of politics, we must hail Nigeria and so we are all saying today that Nigeria, we Hail thee.”
The Senate President then encouraged Nigerians to view themselves as brothers and to promote a spirit of brotherhood among each other.
Lyrics
Nigeria we hail thee
Our own dear native land
Though tribes and tongue may differ
In brotherhood we stand
Nigerians all, are proud to serve
Our sovereign Motherland.
Our flag shall be a symbol
That truth and justice reign
In peace or battle honour’d,
And this we count as gain,
To hand on to our children
A banner without stain.
O God of all creation
Grant this our one request.
Help us to build a nation
Where no man is oppressed
And so with peace and plenty
Nigeria shall be blessed.
