Anyone but You is a 2023 American romantic comedy movie directed by Will Gluck. The movie features Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell in the lead roles.
Bea( Sydney Sweeney) a law student at Boston University, meets Ben( Glen Powell) at a coffee shop. They instantly connect and spend the day together, with Bea eventually falling asleep on Ben’s couch.
Bea leaves quietly in the morning but quickly changes her mind and returns. However, when she arrives, she overhears Ben making disparaging remarks about her to his friend Pete. Unaware that Ben is actually hurt by her sudden departure, Bea leaves.
Six months later, Bea and Ben run into each other again when Bea’s sister, Halle( Hadley Robinson) starts dating Claudia Pete’s sister. The two are cold toward each other, each blaming the other for their previous encounter going badly.
When Halle and Claudia get engaged and plan their wedding in Sydney, Bea, who has broken off her engagement with her fiancé Jonathan( Darren Barnet) and secretly dropped out of law school, is distressed to find out that she and Ben will both be staying at Claudia and Pete’s parents’ house before the wedding. Their animosity frustrates the wedding party, especially with the added tension from the presence of both Bea’s and Ben’s exes, Jonathan and Margaret( Charlee Fraser)
The wedding party devises a plan to bring Bea and Ben together to ensure the wedding goes smoothly. Sensing the setup, Bea proposes to Ben that they pretend to be a couple to make Margaret jealous and to stop her parents from pressuring her to reconcile with Jonathan.
Initially, their act fails to convince anyone, but during a party on a boat, they dance and reenact a scene from Titanic, which ends with Bea falling into Sydney Harbour. Ben jumps in after her, and while waiting for rescue on a buoy, Bea confides that she has dropped out of law school. They make plans to visit the Sydney Opera House together.
After returning to the house, they sleep together, but Bea casually remarks that her recent decisions have all been mistakes, disappointing Ben. He leaves quietly in the morning, leaving Bea feeling disheartened.
On the morning of the wedding, Ben inadvertently reveals to Bea’s parents that she has left law school, making her feel betrayed. After overhearing Halle and Claudia arguing, Ben persuades Bea to pretend they are reconciling for the sake of the wedding. The ceremony goes smoothly, but Bea sees Margaret kissing Ben and leaves in tears, heading to the Opera House.
However, Ben turns down Margaret, admitting he no longer has feelings for her. The wedding guests encourage him to go after Bea, so he leaps off a cliff into the Pacific Ocean and convinces the rescue helicopter to take him to the Opera House.
At the Opera House, Ben tells Bea that he left because he was afraid their relationship would become another regret. Bea confesses that spending the night with him was the first thing she hadn’t regretted in a long time.
They reconcile and return to the reception as a couple, where Halle and Claudia reveal that their argument was a setup to bring Bea and Ben together. Meanwhile, Jonathan and Margaret also get together.
The supporting cast includes Alexandra Shipp, GaTa, Hadley Robinson, Michelle Hurd, Dermot Mulroney, Darren Barnet, Bryan Brown, and Rachel Griffiths.
Anyone But You is made for lovers of rom-com who believe in happy ever after and the concept of having a soul mate, someone who is made specially for you.
