2023 May Dump; Best Moments, Trends & Gist

The month of May held some exciting tales, events and trends. If you missed out on any, let’s take you back as we usher in June.

Here are some key highlights you may have missed:

1) Guinness Record Breaking Month
Two Nigerians, Afrobeat star Rema and famous chef Hilda Baci achieved a massive feat last month. Rema made history by becoming the first artiste to top the Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) chart with his hit single ‘Calm Down’ . While Chef Hilda broke the Guinness record for ‘longest cooking marathon by an individual.’ Although Chef Hilda has not yet been recognized by the Guinness world record, we can already feel it coming.

2) The AMVCA’s
The 9th edition of the African Magic Viewers Choice award held on Saturday 20th May,2023 at Eko Hotel,Lagos State, Nigeria. It was a night of wins as actors, actresses, filmmakers, story tellers, and directors all went home with smiles on their faces. Unforgettable moments from the events are Broda Shaggi’s award of best actor in a comedy making it twice in a roll same with Osas Ighodaro taking home best actress in a drama for the second time in a roll. Veteran Actress Patience Ozokwor A.K.A Mama G was awarded the industry merit award for her dedication and immeasurable contribution to the movie industry.

3) Bade Farewell to Tina Turner
We said our goodbyes to the Queen of Rock and Roll Tina Turner on May 24th,2023. She died at her home in Switzerland at the age of 83. Some of her popular songs include, We Don’t Need Another Hero, What Love Got To Do With It and I Don’t Wanna Lose You.

4) Idan
The Idan trend was the street slang of the month of May. It means the person who is the deal, street smart, the don, the man in charge, the smart guy, the fearless one.
Hilarious examples include:
1) Idan is never late, everyone else is just early.
2)If Idan like your babe, you be ex
3) Idan cannot be guided because you cannot spell GUIDANCE without Idan.
4) When Idan stares at the mirror there will be no reflection, cause there can never be two Idan.

5) Queen Charlotte; A Bridgerton Story
All lovers of 18th Century English romance were blessed last month with a prequel of the series Bridgerton. It tells the story of young Queen Charlotte and King George, their marriage and a love that conquers all, premiered May 4th.

6) The Little Mermaid Premiere
The 2023 American Musical The Little Mermaid starring Halle Bailey as Ariel premiered May 8 2023 at the Dolby Theatre. As at it’s announcement the movie caused a lot of controversies, critics were against the movie on the opinion that a remake of princess Ariel as a black princess wasn’t necessary, while others saw this commentary as racist. The movie however has earned a lot since it premiere surpassing the production budget of $250 million.
