Afrobeats: Spotify Launches New Site Dedicated To The Afrobeats Genre.

Well deserved for its immense contribution to the promotion of Africa’s pop culture, today Spotify launched its new website Afrobeats; Journey of a Billion Streams, to honour the most played genre currently,Afrobeats. According to their statistics, Afrobeats has over 13billion streams on Spotify and it is still growing rapidly, its consumers have gone beyond the African continent to include North American, South American and even Asia countries.

“Whether looking at the genre’s origin in Ghana,its rise and evolution in Nigeria, or its fusion with other genres, we’re spotlighting how Afrobeats became one of Africa’s biggest cultural exports and tracking its under reported narratives.” (Spotify News Room)

The new website will consist of five pillars, the first is titled Origins, this will look into the various musical genres which serve as precursor to the Afrobeats like Highlife and JuJu,the second Evolution explores which industry players contributed to the current Afrobeats sound, thirdly, there’s Fusion which shows how Afrobeats has expanded its wings by merging with other genres such as Reggaeton and Amapiano, the fourth pillar is titled Cultural Exportation this will record Afrobeats influence in food, music, language and fashion within and outside Africa and lastly The Women of Afrobeats, a pillar specially for the women in the industry who have contributed greatly to the rise and popularity of the music genre.

In addition the site will also feature interviews with music experts, key Afrobeats timelines and captivating “Man on the streets” videos filmed in the Subsaharan Market. The site will be updated regularly on a bi-weekly basis for the next eight weeks. However, it will continue to be constantly refreshed with the latest Afrobeats releases, trends and moments.
