Anambra International Airport Renamed After Chinua Achebe.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State renamed the state International Passenger and Cargo Airport after late novelist Chinua Achebe on Sunday October 1,2023.

Chinua Achebe hails from Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state, he died at age 82 in Boston, Massachusetts on March 21, 2013. Popularly known for his book Things Fall Apart, which has a movie adaptation the writer has also written other books No Longer At Ease, Anthills Of The Savannah, Arrow of God, A Man Of The People and others.

Soludo on Sunday in Awka at the Independence Day parade celebrating Nigeria’s 63rd anniversary described Achebe as one of Africa’s unsung heroes. He praised Achebe for giving African literature an identity and a voice in the way he rightly reconstructed and redefined who Africans are, he called Achebe an African and global hero.

Consequently, we will rename the Anambra International Cargo and Passenger Airport, Umueri, to Chinua Achebe International Airport, Umueri. Yes, it has to be an international airport, and we hope to work with the Federal Government to give full effect to its international status.”

Governor Soludo also added that as a motivation to children and youths the state shall be deliberate in celebrating its unsung heroes.

This action taken by the Governor has earned a commendation from the Labour Party Presidential candidate, Peter Obi who made this known on his Twitter page
