For many of us, starting the day with a drink is an essential morning ritual. And while some folks might opt for beverages like orange juice, smoothies, or plain water, most people reach for tea or coffee. These drinks, after all, are some of the most widely consumed beverages in the world. My top 3 favorites in no particular order, will be; Smoothies, Tea, and Coffee.
There are two kinds of people in this world: tea lovers and cafe addicts. While people are debating on which is better between the two, there’s me who likes both and I know I’m not alone. While both beverages have their own set of benefits, people have a preference based on their taste, cultural history, health benefits, flavors, etc. In this blog post, we’ll delve deeper into the great debate of tea vs. Coffee and provide some insights to help you decide which one of them suits you best.
What’s It About The Coffee?
There’s this popular quote that says— “It’s not just a cup of Coffee” and I agree. I’ll tell you why, but first; let’s talk about how coffee is made.
Coffee is made from roasted coffee beans, ground into small particles and has robust flavors. It is usually served hot, although chilled or iced coffee is common. Coffee can be prepared and presented in a variety of ways (e.g. Espresso, French press, Caffè latte, or already-brewed canned coffee). Sugar, sugar substitutes, milk, and cream are often used to mask the bitter taste or enhance the flavor. Although most people think the addition of cream to it alters the purpose of coffee.
It usually appears as though people who drink coffee have made it in life. Well, they have. If you think I’m lying, walk into a mall and check the prices of Espresso or Macquino coffee making machines. If I had a coffee maker, I’ll be proud too. These things are expensive, no jokes. There’s also a common misconception that most people drink coffee as a result of peer pressure due to its bitter taste, but I’d say coffee is worth every hype.
I know you’ll be wondering if you can’t make coffee without a coffee machine. Of Course you can, but if you don’t have an espresso, why are you drinking coffee? This further explains the quote— “It’s not just a cup of Coffee”.
Coffee is a rich source of caffeine that helps improve mental alertness and focus. It is also known for its energetic properties, making it a popular choice for those who need a boost in the morning or have plans to stay up all night. In addition to its taste and energizing properties, coffee has been linked to a number of health benefits. It contains antioxidants, which can help to reduce the risk of certain diseases, such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. It has also been demonstrated that coffee improves physical performance and reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Coffee is the beverage of choice for many people, and for many good reasons like the ones we’ve listed so far. It is a rich, flavorful drink that can be enjoyed in a variety of ways, from a simple cup of black coffee to a complex latte or cappuccino. However, excessive consumption of coffee can cause anxiety, jitteriness, and insomnia.
What’s It About The Tea?
As an average Nigerian, we have our own definition of what tea looks like. What we refer to as ‘tea’ are actually cocoa beverages. So, let’s talk about what the real ‘tea’ is.
Tea is an aromatic beverage prepared by pouring hot or boiling water over cured or fresh leaves of Camellia sinensis (tea plant), which is native to China. Tea has been consumed for thousands of years and is one of the most popular beverages in the world. Tea is a rich source of antioxidants, which help in reducing the risk of chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes, and heart diseases. It also contains caffeine (I guess you didn’t know) which provides a boost of energy.
There are different types of tea (e.g. Green tea, Black tea, White tea, and Oolong tea) and each has its own unique flavor and health benefits. For example, Green tea is known for its high antioxidant content and is said to be the healthiest with the lowest level of caffeine, while Chamomile tea is known for its calming properties, and Black tea is said to have a higher level of caffeine.
One of the main advantages of tea is that it contains less caffeine than coffee. This means that tea is less likely to cause jitteriness or disrupt sleep patterns, making it a great choice for people who are sensitive to caffeine. In addition, tea is often enjoyed as part of a relaxing ritual, such as an afternoon tea break, which can help to reduce stress and promote mindfulness.
Another benefit of tea is its versatility and did I mention that it is also really easy to prepare? Tea can be enjoyed hot or cold, and can be sweetened or flavored in a variety of ways. This means that there is a tea for every taste preference, and it can be enjoyed year-round, in any season and the fun part of it is that you don’t need a machine for it.
Health Benefits
Both tea and coffee have amazing health benefits, although tea has been acknowledged as a healthier option than coffee. Tea contains antioxidants that help protect the body against diseases, while coffee is known to improve cognitive function, reduce the risk of liver disease, and lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Tea also contains less caffeine than coffee, making it a better choice for people who are sensitive to caffeine. Additionally, tea has been shown to be beneficial for heart health, and it may help to lower blood pressure. Some other benefits include;
- Possible decreased risk of dementia: The caffeine in coffee and tea has been said to stimulate brain activity and also may protect against dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
- Lowered risk of type 2 diabetes: Recent research has indicated that the polyphenols from coffee or tea consumption can lower the risk of type 2 diabetes and help improve insulin secretion and sensitivity.
- Protection from cardiovascular disease: The consumption of both coffee and green tea may lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. Because the antioxidants in both may offer protective effects on the vascular system.
- Immune-boosting properties: Coffee, white teas, and green teas can help boost the immune system.
Flavors and Varieties
Tea and coffee have distinct flavors that appeal to different people. While tea has a delicate, subtle flavor that comes in a variety of types, coffee has a robust, bold flavor that many people love. The taste and aroma of coffee also vary depending on the type of beans, roast level, and brewing method used. However, when it comes to flavors and varieties, tea has a wider range of options compared to coffee. From black tea to green tea, herbal tea to white tea, there are countless flavors to choose from. Each variety has its unique taste and aroma, making it an enjoyable experience for tea lovers. Coffee, on the other hand, has Its own varieties like espresso, cappuccino, Americano, and latte. Coffee drinkers can add flavors like vanilla, caramel, or chocolate to their coffee for a different taste, and they could also serve their coffee in a more artistic and personalized way called Latte art.
Caffeine Content
For many people, the caffeine content is the most crucial factor when choosing between tea and coffee. Tea generally has less caffeine than coffee, making it a better choice for people who are sensitive to caffeine or who want to limit their caffeine intake.
Social and Cultural Factors
Tea and coffee also have different social and cultural significance. Tea is often associated with British culture, where it is served with milk and sugar, and the famous afternoon tea is a well-known tradition. In contrast, coffee is often associated with American culture, where it is often consumed on the go and is a staple of the workplace. However, the Coffee is also an essential part of Italian culture, where it is enjoyed in small doses and is often consumed after a meal.
In conclusion, it is difficult to say that one drink is better than the other, because both tea and coffee have their own benefits. It ultimately depends on an individual’s preference and tolerance. If you are looking for a calming, soothing drink that can be enjoyed as part of a relaxing ritual, tea is a great choice. On the other hand, if you need a quick pick-me-up or prefer a bold, flavorful drink, coffee may be more to your liking. Ultimately, the choice is up to you. Try them both and find out which you prefer. Who knows, you might even find that you enjoy the two as well!
However, it is important to note that excessive consumption of the two beverages may have adverse health effects. It is advisable to limit caffeine intake within a day. So, whether you are a tea lover or a coffee aficionado, enjoy your favorite beverage in moderation and reap the benefits it has to offer.

So, which is the best beverage: tea or coffee? The truth is, there is no clear winner. In my opinion, they’re both goated and two GOATs can always co-exist. Both tea and coffee have their pros and cons, and the choice is yours to make.
