The Nollywood biopic Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters, has premiered on Prime Video.
The film narrates the life of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, the mother of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, highlighting her journey from being the first female student at Abeokuta Grammar School to her marriage with Israel Ransome-Kuti. Together, they fought against injustice and established the Abeokuta Women’s Union, sparking a violent clash with both traditional and colonial authorities.
The cast includes Joke Silva, Kehinde Bankole, Adunni Ade, Iyimide Ayo-Olumoko, Ibrahim Suleiman, and Iremide Adeoye.
The film has earned over ₦141.5 million, as reported by the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), and has received several awards: Best Overall Feature Film and Best Screenplay at the 2023 Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF), and Best Writing (Movie) at the 2024 Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA).
