Ibadan Explosion: 77 Injured, 2 Dead.

On Tuesday, January 16, an explosion shook the Bodija area of the city of Ibadan, the capital of Oyo state, causing panic and disarray.

Different reports have been flying all over social media regarding the cause of this unfortunate event.

However, Dotun Oyelade, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation in the state, asserted that the state government was effectively addressing the situation, having dispatched essential personnel to the affected regions.

Addressing journalists in the early hours of Wednesday, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state affirmed that the explosion resulted from explosive devices stored in certain buildings by illegal miners in the Bodija area of Ibadan.

Governor Makinde disclosed that approximately 77 individuals sustained injuries in the explosion, with two fatalities confirmed.

“The wounded and injured are being treated and moved to public and private hospitals within Ibadan. Medical personnel are on standby at these hospitals to provide all needed assistance to the injured. We have visited UCH to see some of those injured during the incident.”

“In total, we have 77 injured victims so far, most of whom were treated and discharged and 2 fatalities. May their souls rest in peace and may God give their loved ones the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”

“We will also be providing temporary accommodation for those whose houses were affected and ensuring that they are supported to rebuild their lives.”

The governor mentioned that a continuing investigation aims to locate and hold accountable the individuals involved in illegal mining.

Rescue operations are still ongoing.
