Illegal Miners From Kogi and Ondo States To Be Prosecuted By FG

Segun Tomori the special assistant on media to the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake disclosed on Monday 2nd September, 2024 that the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development has taken action on illegal miners in Kogi and Ondo States.

In a statement released, in the Ikah community of Ankpa local government area, Kogi State, two Chinese nationals and a Nigerian were arrested for carrying out mining activities without proper authorisation.

Also, a recent operation carried out by mining marshals brought to light an illegal  gold mining site in the Ogunlepa, Oluwa Forest Reserve, Odigbo LGA of Ondo State and four suspects were arrested.

Suspects from both cases have been charged to the federal high court, Abuja.

The statement also further reaffirmed the dedication of the federal government in getting rid of illegal mining in the country by introducing mining marshals and satellite monitoring of mining sites.

The minister further advised those involved to “turn a new leaf and comply with the relevant sections of the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act to regularise their operations.
