President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Prof. John Obafunwa as the new Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR).
In a statement released by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the President’s spokesman, on Monday, it was announced that Prof. John Obafunwa will replace Prof. Babatunde Salako as the Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), starting from July 24, following the expiration of Salako’s tenure on July 23.
The President expects the new Director-General to leverage his extensive experience and qualifications to further the NIMR’s mission of leading research into significant public health issues in Nigeria.
He also anticipates that Obafunwa will establish structures for disseminating research findings while creating an enabling environment and facilities for health research and training, in collaboration with federal and state health ministries.
Obafunwa graduated in medicine from the University of Lagos in 1980 and specialized in Anatomic Pathology in May 1987. He further specialized in Forensic Pathology in Scotland in 1991 and earned a law degree from England in 2004.
He holds several academic qualifications and memberships in professional bodies in the UK, USA, and Nigeria. Before returning to Nigeria in November 2004 to become a Professor of Forensic Pathology at the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), he worked in the Cayman Islands, Bermuda, and the UK.
