Something Like Gold Is Now Streaming On Netflix

Nigerians have a soft spot for stories about a spoiled brat, whether male or female, from a wealthy background who looks down on everyone else—until life takes an unexpected turn, and the silver spoon is swapped for something much less glamorous. If you’re one of those who enjoy tales like this, you’ll find Something Like Gold captivating.

The movie kicks off with the wedding of Tamara Jola-Scott( Sandra Okunzuwa),the beloved daughter of Jolayemi Scott (Patrick Doyle), a big shot in the oil and gas industry. She’s set to marry Demola  (Timini Egbuson), the son of another wealthy family—the perfect match of the rich marrying the rich.

Having been pampered her whole life, Tamara views everyone, including her friends, as beneath her. But on the morning of her wedding, her world is turned upside down when her father is arrested for embezzling company funds, forcing Demola’s family to call off the wedding.

With her father out of the picture, the only person who steps in to help Tamara is Mayowa (Mercy Johnson), her family’s former maid. Now, Tamara must start over from scratch in the trenches—a place she finds utterly repulsive.

Tamara’s inability to adjust to her new circumstances leads to constant arguments with Mayowa. But with no other choice, Tamara gradually opens up and begins to accept her new reality. This shift in attitude brings her closer to Tunde (Kunle Remi) ,a woodworker she meets in her new life.

Things take an even more dramatic turn when Mayowa reveals she is actually Tamara’s biological mother, and Tamara is the result of an affair between Mayowa and Tamara’s father.

This revelation helps Tamara understand why Mayowa was so eager to help her. Tamara accepts the truth, allowing a mother-daughter bond to grow between them, while also developing a romantic relationship with Tunde.

Just as it seems Tamara is finally finding her place in the world and living happily, her father is released, and Demola reappears, hoping to reconcile. However, Tamara refuses to take Demola back, having realized he lacks the strength to stand up for himself and what he truly loves.

The most remarkable aspect of Something Like Gold is Tamara’s character development. She evolves from a pompous, spoiled brat into a caring and understanding woman. The movie beautifully portrays how she adapts to her situation, accepting that life often throws us into tough situations. Instead of complaining, Tamara learns to blend into her new reality while working to improve it.

Directed by Kayode Kasum, other members of the cast list include Teniola Aladese, Segun Arinze, Waliu Fagbemi, Salami Bela Maureen, Ru No, Bukky Ogunnote, Broda Shaggi and others.
