Female friendship is one of life’s most underrated blessings. Having a soul sister—someone who knows all your strengths and weaknesses, always has your back, and sticks with you through thick and thin—is like having an angel on earth. There’s nothing quite like it.
This bond of love, shared memories, and experiences is beautifully explored in Love Notes by Diana Russet.
Produced by Diana Russet, written by Abdul Tijani-Ahmed and Ogechi Nwobia Eke, and directed by Akinkunle Michael Akinrogunde, Love Notes delves into the power of friendship and sacrifice.
Film Synopsis
Tammy (Beverly Osu) and Maris (Uzoamaka Aniunoh) have been best friends forever. Tammy is married to Kenny (Baaj Adebule), and they have a son together. Despite both being carriers of the AS genotype, Tammy and Kenny’s love defied the odds. Fortunately, their son was born without sickle cell disease. However, fearful of the risks with her next pregnancy, Tammy secretly aborts the baby without telling Kenny.
Meanwhile, Maris is a successful lawyer who has struggled with infertility, the cause known to only her and Tammy. Her mother’s attempts to match her with a man seem to be in vain until a fateful encounter with Ose (Abdul Tijani–Ahmed) changes her life. After a run-in with police officers, Ose comes to Maris’ aid, leading to their arrest but also sparking a romance. The two eventually marry.
After four years as a stay-at-home mom, Tammy is eager to return to the corporate world. Maris connects her with Barch (Kunle Remi), an investor and one of her clients. Tammy pitches a logistics business idea to him, which her husband, Kenny, initially disapproves of but eventually supports.
Two years into her marriage, Maris still isn’t pregnant. Aware of her fertility struggles, she convinces Ose to consider surrogacy, which he agrees to. However, their chosen surrogate runs off with the 5 million naira payment, leaving Maris devastated. In an act of selflessness, Tammy offers to carry the baby for Maris—without informing Kenny.
During a heated argument, Kenny reveals that he knows about Tammy’s abortion and Maris’ infertility. Despite his hurt, Kenny agrees to Tammy’s surrogacy plan out of love for her.
Tammy’s business pitch to Barch is successful, and she is invited to dinner to celebrate. However, things take an unexpected turn, and Tammy ends up having an affair with Barch. This mistake shakes her marriage, ultimately leading to her contracting HIV/AIDS.
Fearing the risk to the baby, Ose suggests an abortion, but Maris refuses, vowing to support Tammy through both her pregnancy and her illness. This leads to Maris and Ose’s separation.
Eventually, Tammy and Kenny reconcile, and months later, Maris’ daughter, Pearl, is born.
Through all the trials these two women face, one thing remains constant: they never abandon each other. Their friendship is a testament to the power of soul sisters—sacrificing, supporting, and standing by one another, no matter what.
We see them being each other’s shoulder to cry on, protector, and source of laughter. Their friendship is truly admirable and enviable—a bond we should all strive for with our own best friends.
