Who Will Take Home The Best Movie Crown At The AMVCA Tonight?

In March 2024, Multichoice Nigeria announced the nominations for the 10th Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, scheduled to be held tonight at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos State, Nigeria.

The Best Movie nominee list sparked significant online reactions and debates over which film deserves the award. Two movies stood out: A Tribe Called Judah and Breath of Life.

Synopsis of Breath of Life

Told through Elijah’s perspective, the narrative tracks Timi, a bright young man distinguished for his academic prowess and fluency in 16 languages. He achieves the remarkable feat of becoming the inaugural African clergyman in the Church of England.

Upon marrying Bridget and starting a family, Timi relocates to Nigeria, where he finds contentment until a devastating encounter with Baby Fire, a notorious local criminal, shatters his world. The ensuing tragedies prompt Timi to withdraw from society, becoming a solitary figure. Eventually, Elijah emerges as a pivotal figure in Timi’s life, guiding him towards a journey of spiritual renewal and rediscovery of his calling.

Synopsis of A Tribe Called Judah

A Tribe Called Judah portrays the life of Jedidah Judah, a resilient single mother played by Funke Akindele, who raises five sons, each from a different father representing diverse tribes. While the first two sons diligently support their family, the last three exhibit troublesome behaviour. Despite their flaws, Jedidah stands by her sons, often bailing them out of trouble.

However, their challenges escalate when Jedidah falls ill with a severe kidney condition, necessitating expensive medical treatment. Facing financial strain, the sons devise a risky plan to rob Emeka’s ex-boss, rumored to be involved in money laundering, to raise funds for their mother’s treatment. Yet, their scheme takes an unexpected turn when they encounter armed robbers during the heist.

Upon the announcement of the nominees, netizens divided into two camps: fans of Breath of Life and supporters of Funke Akindele and her movies.

Fans of Breath of Life argue that the film breaks away from typical Nollywood stereotypes, offering a fresh and calm storyline that doesn’t rely on the loudness of traditional Nigerian movie settings. They believe that the only advantage A Tribe Called Judah holds is its social media popularity, attributed to promotion by Funke Akindele and her team.

Supporters of A Tribe Called Judah commend its realistic portrayal of Nigerian mothers and the lengths they go to for their children. They also assert that the movie illustrates how a mother’s love is repaid tenfold, as demonstrated when Jedidah’s sons, despite their questionable behavior, unite to save her.

Other nominees for Best Movie include Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Over the Bridge, Blood Vessel, The Black Book, and Mami Wata.
